Pet Insurance

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER PET INSURANCE

You can never be prepared for every unexpected cost that comes with being a pet parent. Emergency situations and unexpected illnesses and injuries can strike at any time. With pet insurance, you get peace of mind knowing that those unexpected costs are covered so you never have to deny care for your pet based on cost. You can enroll your pet in an insurance plan at any time, but the best time to do it is when your pet is still young! This will help you save on premiums and also ensure that your pet has no pre-existing conditions that won’t get covered.

WHAT DOES PET INSURANCE COVER & HOW DOES IT WORK?

Many pet insurance plans cover emergencies and unexpected illnesses or injuries and some even cover preventive services, too. When you enroll in an insurance plan, you’ll notice some similarities with human insurance such as having a monthly premium, a deductible, and a policy that details what is and isn’t covered.

Yet, one big difference is how pet insurance companies pay out. Pet insurance plans do not pay your veterinarian directly, so it’s up to you to cover the full cost of your pet’s care at the time services are rendered. Then, you can file a claim to your insurance company and receive your reimbursement.

MOST INSURANCE PLANS ARE ACCEPTED AT OUR HOSPITAL

At Companion Animal Hospital of Mount Prospect, we encourage you to fully research all your options and choose the best plan that works for you and your pet. To help you start your research, we’ve collected some basic facts about two of the larger pet insurance companies, Trupanion and Nationwide.

Trupanion

Trupanion only offers one plan and it covers all unexpected illnesses and injuries. What you can choose is your monthly payment. Trupanion offers a sliding payment scale that adjusts your deductible and coverage based on the monthly payment you choose. Reimbursements from Trupanion are 90% after you reach your deductible.

Nationwide

Nationwide offers multiple plans, some of which over only unexpected illness and injury, while others cover wellness care as well. If you have your car or home insurance with Nationwide, you may be eligible for a multi-line discount. For reimbursement, different plans have different rates, so be sure to do your research and pick the best one that works for your budget.
