CAT AND DOG VACCINATIONS IN MOUNT PROSPECT, IL
Cat and dog vaccinations can provide effective defense against dangerous viruses like rabies and parvo. Whether they’re young, old, or somewhere in between, your pet’s health will benefit from routine vaccinations. Diseases can spread quickly among unvaccinated dogs and cats, and some of these can affect humans as well. Therefore, due to the harm these diseases can pose to both animals and people, our team at Companion Animal Hospital Mount Prospect highly recommends annual vaccinations for your pet. Call (847) 296-1188 to schedule an appointment with our veterinarians for your pet!
WHAT MAKES THESE DISEASES DANGEROUS?
Rabies and parvo are life-threatening diseases that take effect quickly. Without immediate treatment, they can be fatal. Feline leukemia is similarly dangerous for cats, especially if they go outside and encounter an infected animal. Lyme disease and leptospirosis are zoonotic diseases, which means infected animals can transmit them to humans. Lyme and leptospirosis are not as lethal, but they can still affect your pet’s health (and yours)!

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CORE AND NON-CORE VACCINES
The American Animal Hospital Association’s vaccine guidelines categorize two types of vaccine: core and non-core. Core vaccines are the most important and highly-recommended, and usually include rabies and distemper/FVRCP. Every pet should receive these vaccines on a regular basis throughout their lifetime.
Non-core vaccines include those we recommend based on specific lifestyle factors. If your pet has a higher risk of becoming infected with kennel cough or leptospirosis, they should be vaccinated for these diseases.
PLANNING FOR THE LONG TERM
To figure out a vaccination timeline for your pet, let’s start by discussing what vaccines your pet needs. Puppies and kittens need to receive a series of distemper/FVRCP boosters to increase their immunity gradually, but they may also benefit from non-core vaccinations during this period. As your pet grows older, their vaccination protocol will change with them. Keeping up with your pet’s yearly wellness checks is the best way for us to prolong their disease immunity with vaccinations.
